About the event

Poetry is experiencing a resurgence among teens and adults, largely influenced by the hip hop and rap music trends over the last few decades. If you’re a teen between 13 and 18, come participate in an intro to poetry on Saturday, April 6, and continuation on April 13, 2-4 pm, at the Birdhouse. You’ll learn how language, imagery, rhythm, voice and meaning—the basic building blocks of poetry—combine to make a good poem. We’ll read poems, write poems, and discuss poems, including yours, over the 4 total hours we’re together. The cost is $20 for the two sessions (or $12 for just one) and includes a course packet to take home. Scholarships are available: email birdhouse.knoxville@gmail.com to inquire.

A snack and drinks will be provided, plus paper and pens/pencils.

Celia Lawren is a writer and poet residing in Knoxville, Tennessee, after living for many year in the San Francisco Bay area. She has had a long career in marketing technology products. Her first poetry collection is Among Dead Things. She has also published works in Caesura and the Tule Review.
